“Lifetime” means the design life of the unit — conveniently just past warranty. ZF, who builds most German automatics, publicly recommends service every 50,000–60,000 miles. Every high-mileage German transmission we see confirms it.

Do harsh shifts mean my transmission is failing?

Usually not. Degraded fluid, adaptation drift, sensor faults, and software issues cause most shifting complaints. We diagnose with brand-specific tools before recommending anything — many “failing” gearboxes just need a proper service.

What’s special about DSG service?

VW/Audi dual-clutch boxes have a firm 40,000-mile fluid and filter interval. The service requires specific fluid, fill procedure, and temperature measurement. Skipping it risks mechatronic failure — one of the priciest VW repairs.

Why is the fill procedure such a big deal?

German automatics have no dipstick — fluid level is set at a precise temperature through a fill port, per factory procedure. Wrong level means poor shifting and long-term damage. It’s a major reason to use a specialist.

Can you fix transmission leaks?
